Finlandia, 2019


In Finlandia (00:04:29), Cheffi takes the Finnish National Hymn, originally composed by renowned Finnish Composer Jean Sibelius, and translates it to Tunisian Arabic, where it is sung in a traditional Mawwal style. This sound is accompanied by a triptych video installation consisting of poetically animated shapes and a spectrum of colors mimicking the visual style of Cheffi’s paintings.

In January 2020, Finnish-Tunisian artist Dora Dalila Cheffi spent a week in Sejnane, Tunisia learning the traditional Amazigh style of pottery making. Through the process of learning this craft and spending time with new friends and women from this rural region, she finds metaphors for her current life experiences in the city of Tunis. The five artworks produced were part of her first solo exhibition in Tunisia, Bitter Oranges.

Perfect Child (00:10:30)  is a conversation between two friends confronting similar challenges. They discuss their respective feelings of fear, disappointment, angst,

anxiety, and forgiveness while anticipating conversations with their parents about their deviant lifestyle choices. This project premiered at Kino Andorra in Helsinki and was part of the Helsinki Pride Week program in 2018.
